Goals of the institution:

  • Taking care of moderating and correction of the defects in the mental development of children under 18 with moderate and severe debility, as well as light imbecility;

  • To direct, prepare and train mentally retarded children in their work and the professions that best suit their abilities and tendencies;

  • Organizing pre-school upbringing, primary and professional working education of mentally retarded children and youth and chldren and youth population with autism;

  • Observing, diagnostics, classification, i.e. categorization of mentally underdeveloped children and youth;

  • Keeping records and statistics;

  • Correction and moderating of the mental and physical defects of this category of children and youth by means of the necessary medical therapy;

  • Development and usage of the existent abilities for practical living of these children and youth through primary education;

  • Professional orientation as well as successive professional orientation of these children and youth;

  • Organization of prevention and early diagnosis for enabling comprehensive treatment of pre-school children through organizing appropriate services for prevention and pre-school upbringing;

  • Taking care of employment of the work-enabled persons through preventive workshops and different services.

  • Today the Institute for rehabilitation of children and youth - Skopje is a state institution of public interest in which moderately mentally retarded children and youth are being taken care of, educated and trained. The Institute also provides stay for the adults in the Day Center. Its activity, the Institute is accomplishing thru the following tasks:

    • Observation;

    • Diagnostics;

    • Classification, i.e. categorization of mentally retarded children and youth;

    • Keeping record of mentally retarded children and youth;

    • Correction and moderation of the defects in mentally retarded persons through corrective exercises;

    • Usage and development of the mental and physical abilities and possibilities for working and living by means of organized pre-school and special upbringing and education following programs adapted to persons with moderate mental retardation;

    • Professional orientation and training of the youth in industry and agriculture direction for certain jobs and job operations through practical training;

    • Providing accommodation and nourishment for the boarding students as well as transport and daily stay for the external students from the region of Skopje;

    • Primary health care and regular check-ups for bettering the health of the students;

    • Organizes daily stay, professional engagement and professional occupation of the adults with developmental disabilities.

    Overview of the professional work through the organizational set up:

  • Observation - diagnostic and counseling department;

  • Therapy - corrective department (since 1996 it has been replaced with the Day Center for adults);

  • Kindergarten for pre-school children in which schildren with autism are also included;

  • Special school for primary education according to the abilities of the protégés;

  • Special school for students in the economy ;

  • Department for professional orientation;

  • Department (workshops and services) for manufacture- industry training of youth;

  • Department (agriculture) for training the youth for work in gardening, poultry farming and fruit-growing;

  • Stationary for protégés from the provinces of the Republic, including a kitchen, dining-room and ambulance;

  • General ward.

  • Today, for accomplishment of all the goals of the Institute, the following working units exist and are active:

  • Department for education and upbringing;

  • Department for training and a Day Care Center, that started working on 8 April 1994;

  • Department for health and a boarding school;

  • Service for legal, personal and general matters;

  • Service for financial and material working;

  • Kitchen ward.

  • The following of the professional problematic is done by a professional team composed of a defectologist, a psychologist, a doctor- specialist and a social worker. This team meats on regular basis, and especially on the request of the director, manager or any one of the members.

    The basic task of the team is following the development and advancement, socialization of children and youth; undertakes activities for systematic following, observing and advancement of children; categorizing children in groups and transferring the protégés from one group to another with a conversation done before; other individual steps in soling the problems and transferring the protégés from education into professional training.
