History: Beginning from the school year of 1993/1994 at the Institute of Pedagogy, studies in defectology were open. Later, in the school year of 1996/1997 with a special decision of the Academic Council, the studies in defectology continued to exist as a special Institute of Defectology. Studies The studies last for four years and are realized by a special curriculum. The graduate students are given the title of Graduate defectologist. This professional profile, as a general defectologist is trained to perform upbringing-educational and rehabilitation work with children with developmental disabilities (blind, weak-sighted, deaf, weak-of-hearing, mentally retarded and somato-invalid children) from pre-school and primary school age in special pre-school institutions, special primary schools and rehabilitation institutions. Also, the graduate defectologist will be qualified to work as a part of the professional team in the regular pre-school and school institutions, as well as in the health and social-protection institutions in which the processes of protection, education and rehabilitation are realized and to work with children with problems in their physical an mental development. Within the Institute there are additional one-year defectological studies organized for subject teachers which are to work in the special schools and the special departments in the regular schools for children and youth with developmental disturbances. These studies are organized as an additional defectological education for graduate subject teachers from the adequate faculties, which work or wish to work with children and youth with developmental disturbances. Beside the subjects from the basic curriculum, students chose one subject from the group of choice subjects:

Brief examinations: Students take brief examinations in the following subjects: general defectology, structural defectology, orthopedagogy, psychology of handicapped persons, didactics with special didactics, methodics of early treatment and pre-school education of handicapped children, methodics of class teaching of light mentally retarded children and methodics of class teaching of deaf and hard-of-hearing children.
Order of studies
Exams in methodics are composed of practical and theoretical part; exam in Macedonian is written; statistics- oral and written; all other exams- oral.
Students are obliged to do two seminary works during their studies, of which one during the second and the other during the third year. The subjects concerned should be the defectological ones as well as a research project from methodology of research in defectology.
The student can roll for the next year if, to the September exam session inclusive passes the exams in all subjects for which the lessons finish the previous year. As an exception, the student can roll for the next year even if s/he hadn’t passed two of the exams from the previous year, on the condition that he passes them to the February exam session of the current year. The student that hasn’t passed the two last exams repeats the year of studies.
Every student is obliged to do a final work concerning the defectological subjects and to defend it in front of an examining board.
Students are obliged to do practical teaching in the adequate institutions for 15 days in third and fourth year each.
After graduating, the student is awarded the title of graduate defectologist.
